Caselli: salt control

Saline area - These were the control posts of the salt pans, both on the production and on the trade of the precious white gold, which in addition to being a commodity of primary importance for the preservation of food, was a high-value exchange commodity. Smuggling was widespread inside the salt flats, so much so that the officers were often attacked by brigands and thieves.

In the past there were 13 "toll booths", located in the perimeter of the salt basins. The control of the salt pans was exercised by the Papal Customs officers, who were militarized in 1786 and became the Pontifical Finance Corps, which in Cervia operated with pickets of soldiers in bluish uniforms.
They were replaced, with the unification of Italy, by the Italian financiers who continued to control the salt flats, first taking refuge in wooden sentry boxes and then in concrete sentry boxes (some still visible).
Only 5 of the 13 original toll booths remain: the Ravenna toll booth, visible from the Adriatica state road; the Madonna del Pino toll booth, near the sanctuary of the same name; the Cesena toll booth, at Villa Inferno; the Devil's exit, south of the Saline Visitor Center; the Bova toll booth (near the Visitor Center), where the dewatering pump is also located, for controlling the water level.
