Municipal theater
Via XX Settembre 125 - After the ancient theater, a small room of about 200 seats located in the south-east bastion of the city, was considered too narrow to host serious performances, it was decided to build the new theater in the west bulwark of the quadrilateral.
It was inaugurated on December 25, in 1862, after about two years of work; on the front of the entrance to the theater there is a plaque indicating the start date of the works in 1860. Defined by the people of Cervia as “la Bomboniera”, today it is a theater with almost 250 seats, with an audience, two tiers of boxes and a gallery. Particularly interesting are the decorations inside.
The most valuable artifact is the “velario”, a curtain used for the first time in 1863, a few months after the inauguration of the theater.
The canvas depicts Apollo's boat arriving at the port of Cervia escorted by 9 muses, while she is reached by the boat of the Cervesi Magistrates.
On the curtain are also represented the Torre San Michele and the burchiella, the typical Cervese boat that was used to transport salt. It seems that this curtain is the only one in Emilia Romagna with a marine subject.
